Porfirio Diaz

Porfirio Diaz was a mexican general and was 18 when the Mexican-American War happened in 1848. He was president of mexico in 1876-1880 and 1884-1910. Diaz became a hero fighting the war against the French in the 1860's. In 1863 he was a prisoner of the war ; he escaped and became commander in Benito Juarez's Central Army. Diaz stayed loyal to Benito Juarez until the French backed off everything was back together and Juarez became president of Mexico in 1868. Diaz was interested in being the new president of Mexico so he wanted to turn is fame into power. He tried to rebel against Juarez but he failed to resist against the mexican president. He continued to fight to gain control of the central government. In 1876 he defeated the federal troops and he declared himself president of mexico. He lasted one term and the people were disappointed because they thought he was a hero. Almost all the people of mexico immediately knew what Diaz was planning he wanted to stay in power by corruption and violence especially against the poor people. Instead of running for a 2nd term he made sure that the new president followed his command. The new president was Manuel Gonzalez and he continued the corruption that Diaz made him do. In 1884 Diaz was re-elected because they wanted to get rid of Gonzalez. Madero wanted him out and wrote a book that made the people of mexico know what Diaz was doing. Diaz stepped down and left mexico to live in Paris. Four years later he dies in Paris and was buried there too.
